'Tide Cluster' – Chaotic, Dense, Energetic
Bull kelp sculpture created in Cape Town
Twisted, wedged and layered into dense formations, washed-up kelp along Cape Town’s beaches appears chaotic at first glance – yet it follows an inherent structural logic.
‘Tide Cluster’ does not imitate these natural accumulations but reconfigures them into a deliberate sculptural composition. The individual elements are connected exclusively by leather, without screws, nails or adhesive, allowing tension and balance to emerge from the material itself.
Natural crack structures are partially accentuated with gold, shifting the perception of what is often regarded as marine debris into something precious. The work moves between ecological reality and aesthetic reinterpretation, forming a dynamic 360-degree object that changes character depending on viewpoint and light.
